Hither Green & Catford Stations – Access For All Funding Bid Success
I am extremely pleased to let you know that both Hither Green Station and Catford Station were announced as stations for which their rail providers will be receiving funding from ‘Access for All’ to make these stations step free.
This fund was provided by the Department for Transport for rail companies to bid for. In order to bid they reached out to the local communities. They also reached out to Lewisham Council for submissions to support their bid, which our council officers were only too pleased and keen to do, as step free access and inclusivity is a key objective for us as Councillors and as a Council.
Step free access at our stations has been a long sustained campaign over very many years. It has involved local Councillors, the Mayor and MPs past and present, the community and various local organisations, and it is thanks to them and to you all that the rail companies have listened, and reached out to us so that with all our support they have made a successful bid. It is now for us to be a critical friend in its delivery, and ensure that with respect to Catford Station it is delivered in conjunction with the master plan for Catford, and factors in the Bakerloo Line Extension.
There is still much to do but I wanted to thank you and ask you to pass on our thanks to previous members of the council, the community and local groups & organisations.
Special thanks over the years to Vick Foxcroft MP, Heidi Alexander, and past and present councillors of Lewisham Central, Lee Green, Rushey Green, Catford South and their members.
It shows what we can achieve when we work together.
